Karen with Tarina Regal Heiress |
My name
is Karen Schieck. I grew up with 4 brothers and sisters. We always had a pet
dog that was part of our family. When I was a child I was in love with horses.
I was so enchanted with horses I used to tell my parents that horses smelled
like flowers to me.
My first purebred dog was a cream Miniature Poodle. This experience got me involved with obedience training and showing. My mother and I were both attached to this dog, so when it came time for me to leave home we decided to breed her. We went to a Poodle kennel and pretty much left the choice of sire to the owner of the kennel. We had 6 puppies and the family kept 4 and 2 were sold. It was while I was attending shows with my poodles that I saw Tommy Glassford, a handler, showing Ch. Ammon Hall Nomad. When Tommy started to gate this red dog ‘Nomad’ he leaped into the air and then collected himself in a trot. I was immediately hooked and began looking for my first Afghan Hound shortly afterward. In my 20’s I switched my fascination from horses to Afghan Hounds. Afghans are very unique creatures. For me they combine characteristics of other animals like cats and horses that I love which makes them the perfect dog for me. Like horses, the better examples in the breed have wonderful upright carriage as they might be gaiting around looking for prey. Like cats in their aloofness, independence, and when they take a stalking position in play hunting their litter or kennel mates. Afghans can be real clowns and this is great fun and adds to the interesting interactions between the dogs and with their people. |
| After I found my first dog, Delhi Downs Mahali Matisse, from a breeder I ended up attending many specialties and the National Specialty for many many years before breeding my first litter in 1988. During this time I met my husband, Tony, who was really not as serious a dog person as me. He was surprised when we took a long distance trip and I took a dog along. Tony was not so optimistic that having a dog along was a good idea. By the end of the trip he had forgotten the dog was in the car. The Afghan would find a spot in the back of the Cherokee and sack out for the ride. He was no trouble. Tony and I were later married. | |

Once we were settled in our first house I acquired my first brood bitch, Cypress Cyan. To this point I had only owned males. We bred her to Ch. Orinoco Mahali Jordan a dog we had from 6 months until his untimely death at the age of 9. He was a big cream dog with a wonderful gate. Cypress Cyan was inbred on Jordan’s sire Ch. Sharif’s Skys the Limit. So, for our first Afghan Hound litter we inbred again on Ch. Sharif’s Skys the Limit. What I ended up with was 5 big animals and 2 typey bitches, Princess ‘X’ of Cyan and Zuri Cyan. It was with these 2 typey bitches that I continued with my breeding program. We then acquired two other dogs, Ch. Elmo’s BluChip Balanchine and Tarina Regal Heiress (13 pts.). These 4 dogs constituted the foundation of the Cyan Line.
